Many skin “rashes” are disorders of skin cell metabolism (eczema, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, scleroderma) and require specific diagnosis and treatment. Some “rashes” are of infectious origin (bacteria, viruses, parasites, funguses, yeasts) and require a proper diagnosis for therapy.
True allergic “rashes” are mediated by the skin’s immune response (poison ivy, contact dermatitis, insect bites, drug eruptions), are usually intensely itchy and must be distinguished from other skin diseases and the cause identified.
